ABOUT THE EVENT

Popular entertainment media - whether it’s produced in Lagos, Delhi or Hollywood - has the power to impact beliefs and behaviors. Societal and gender norms have been shaped by, and are reinforced by, depictions in popular film and television. Yet, much global ‘narrative change’ advocacy focuses on social impact-driven documentary filmmaking, or edutainment content with limited audience reach. With the support of the Gates Foundation, Women In Film (WIF) and the World Bank have conducted research and analysis on the impact of popular film and television in Nigeria, Kenya and India - mapping gender norms and representation, and formulating action plans for how the commercial filmmaking sector can more effectively collaborate with social behavioral change experts and resources. WIF and the World Bank will be joined by the World Cinema Fund, which supports the next generation of filmmakers from the Global South in collaborations and co-productions. This LeadersTalk will dig into the structural realities of local-for-global storytelling, how films reach mainstream audiences, and how cross-sector collaboration can be best designed for impact. Speaker in this session include: Sata Cissokho, Head of World Cinema Fund

Andria Wilson Mirza, Director of International Programs, WIF

T. Oluwaseyi Ishola, Research and Program Specialist, The World Bank

Moderated by Kirsten Schaffer, CEO, WIF
