Fifty years ago, the women of Iceland did something remarkable. On one historic day, 90% of Icelandic women put down their tools in workplaces, homes, and communities and demanded recognition, equality, and fair pay.
The nation stopped. Schools closed. Businesses paused. Fathers brought their children to work. And the world took notice.
That day, Kvennafrídagurinn, the Women’s Day Off of 1975 ignited a global movement for equality. At its heart were the trailblazing women of the Red Stocking Movement, courageous, uncompromising, and visionary. Their voices and leadership sparked change that reshaped Iceland and inspired generations worldwide.
From Vision to Blueprint
In the decades since, Iceland has transformed ideals into action, becoming the global benchmark for gender equality, closing more than 90% of the gender gap.
But progress isn’t just measured in numbers. It’s built on solidarity, courage, and the belief that equality uplifts everyone.
Together, we continue to push forward, driven by the same spirit that sparked a revolution 50 years ago.
