Women across Iceland took to the streets on 24 October 1975, in an unprecedented strike, refusing to work at their jobs and in their homes. Their united action marked a turning point in the nation’s journey toward equality, demonstrating the indispensable role of women in every sphere of society.
Fifty years on, Iceland stands as a global leader in gender equality. This remarkable progress is a testament to the courage, vision, and determination of the women who demanded change, and to the generations who have carried their legacy forward.
As we commemorate this milestone, the Reykjavík Global Forum honors both the historic strike and Iceland’s continued commitment to advancing equality. It is a reminder that when women Power, Together, societies transform.
Let us celebrate the progress made, reflect on the road still ahead, and reaffirm our shared responsibility to keep moving towards a future where equality is not the exception, but the norm.

On October 24, 1975, Iceland witnessed a moment that changed history. Ninety percent of the nation’s women left their jobs and homes to join Kvennafrí, the Women’s Day Off, demanding recognition, equality, and fair pay.
At the heart of this movement were the women of the Red Stocking Movement, who stood with courage, conviction, and vision. Their leadership, their voices, and their refusal to remain silent gave strength to thousands and laid the foundation for the progress we see today.
We honour these women, their bravery, their solidarity, and their fight, which continues to inspire generations.
Because of them, Iceland, and the world was reminded that when women power, together, change is unstoppable!

The Women’s Day Off was not simply a strike — it was a national demonstration of solidarity that made visible what had long been invisible: the indispensable role of women in every part of society.
On 24 October 1975, 90% of Icelandic women stopped working in their jobs, in their homes, and in their communities. The nation paused. Schools closed. Businesses slowed. Fathers brought their children to work. And the world took notice.
That single day forced Iceland to confront inequality in a way that could no longer be ignored. It became a catalyst for change, leading directly to Iceland’s first Gender Equality Act the following year — and laying the foundation for Iceland’s leadership in gender equality ever since.
As the Reykjavík Global Forum gathers this November, we honor the 50 years of progress and shared power, we honour moments and milestones that prove lasting change begins with courage, unity, and action.

The 1975 Women’s Strike remains one of the most significant milestones in Iceland’s and the world’s journey toward equality. Women across Iceland took the day off, from paid work and unpaid care, to make a powerful point: that women’s contributions are socially and economically indispensable, yet too often undervalued.
The idea first emerged from the feminist movement Rauðsokkahreyfingin (the Redstockings) in 1970. Five years later, it became a reality. Women from all political parties, professional organisations, and activist groups joined together to form The Committee for the Women’s Day Off.
Their demands were clear and wide-ranging: equal hiring opportunities, fair wages, childcare accessibility, recognition for domestic labour, and representation in trade unions. The strike brought these issues to the centre of public debate, and inspired both immediate policy discussions and long-term systemic change.
Gender equality is a global story, written by countless acts of courage and collaboration.

What began as a day of unity in 1975 became a movement that reshaped the nation, from equal pay legislation to gender-balanced leadership and the world’s first democratically elected female president.
The progress since then has been extraordinary. But its true power lies not only in what was achieved, but how it was achieved, through solidarity, courage, and the belief that when women rise, societies rise with them.
Today, Iceland continues to show what’s possible when equality is built into our systems, workplaces, and culture. Yet the journey is ongoing both in Iceland and elsewhere. Dare we power together for equality?
As the Reykjavík Global Forum marks 50 years of progress and shared power, we honour those who stood together then and those who continue the fight today.
💬 When women power together, the world moves forward.

The Women’s Strike in 1975 led to the Icelandic parliament passing a gender equality bill in 1976, a landmark piece of legislation mandating that women and men receive equal pay for work of equal value.
The Gender Equality Act was more than a law, it was a promise. A promise that discrimination would no longer be tolerated. A commitment to build systems that uplift all people.
By forging equality into law, Iceland turned vision into structure, and structure into progress. A fair society benefits everyone.

In 2000, Iceland redefined family policy and gender equality by introducing one of the world’s most progressive parental leave laws. The reform extended total paid leave to nine months, divided equally between parents:
Three months for one parent (non-transferable)
Three months for the other parent (non-transferable)
Three months to share between parents
For the first time, both parents were given an equal right and an equal responsibility to care for their children.
The law also guaranteed 80% of salary compensation for working parents and protected employees from dismissal during leave.
The impact was profound:
📈 Father participation in childcare rose dramatically.
⚖️ Work–family balance improved across Icelandic households.
💡 The gender pay gap narrowed, as caregiving became a shared duty.
This pioneering model has inspired policies across the world, proving that equality at home is essential to equality in society.
As the Reykjavík Global Forum celebrates 50 years of progress and shared power, we reflect on this milestone, a reminder that lasting equality begins in the family, where care and responsibility are shared.
